In 1945 LeRoy and Joyce Wasmund were united in marriage and began their career in farming. LeRoy’s family farmed in Morris County but the young couple moved to Franklin County to start their dairy farm on 300 acres just south and east of Princeton. In 1948 they paid $30/acre!
Their dairy herd was 17 head of registered Holstein to begin with. They used a gas powered milking machine in the early years. They had dairy cattle until 1990 when they switched to beef cattle with 60 head of Angus. By 1990 they were working 750 acres. Joyce remembered being in the corral with LeRoy working to tag a newborn calf in the wind and snow. The mother cow kept trying to butt them away from her calf. As they walked back to the house, LeRoy told Joyce he had had enough. Those cattle were gone in two weeks!
Joyce is proud of what a good manager her husband was. She shared that farmers throughout Franklin County helped clear the right away for KCP & L to bring electric lines to the rural area. They built their home in 1951 where they raised their four daughters.
Joyce says the best thing about farming is the freedom to make your own decisions. The hardest thing about farming was getting everything done!
The Wasmund’s were part of the Franklin County Farm Bureau since it was connected with the extension office. Joyce served as district women’s chair for ten years. She was the first woman president of the Franklin County Farm Bureau when she was elected in 1986.
